Trans women have been using refuges for years, unnoticed! Why the sudden hoo ha? Women are risk assessed before being allowed into a refuge and whilst there are there. If they don’t follow the rules etc they are chucked out. I had one young woman who was denied access to a certain refuge because of her background. Refuges aren’t free for all’s. People should be concentrating on campaigning for more refuges for women’s services, as there are so few, rather than trying to deny space to a certain group of women. And as far as I am aware, there was a restructuring of a dept. Think the headline here is disingenuous. Anyone who goes through the physical and mental trauma of changing the gender they were assigned with, is not going to pretend to be in need of a refuge – they will genuinely need that refuge. And I’m pretty sure the last thing on their mind at that point is to be predatory towards others who are suffering. If anything, they will be more stressed about the reception they might get from those who don’t understand and are bigoted. The fact is that refuges deal with women who use violence against other women on site. Fearing violence from transgender women does not hold up in this context. BBC.
